TMJ vs. TMD: What’s the Difference?
TMJ
The term “TMJ” refers to your temporomandibular joint. This is the bone you feel at the bottom of your earlobe on both sides of your face.
TMD
On the other hand, “TMD” refers to temporomandibular joint disorders. Simply speaking, it’s the pain or discomfort you feel around your TMJ.
TMD & TMJ Treatment Options
Braces or Invisalign
Since misaligned teeth and malocclusions can contribute to TMDs, braces and Invisalign correct these issues for a more aligned bite. This reduces the stress on your TMJ when biting.
Splints or Mouthguards
If you clench your jaw or grind your teeth, splints and mouthguards can provide temporary relief. They are customized to your teeth to put your jaw in a more relaxed position.
Surgical Treatment
Unfortunately, sometimes non-surgical methods don’t provide the relief you need. When this happens, your orthodontist may recommend surgical options that provide more direct relief. Consult with your orthodontist to find the right surgical treatment for you.
Collaboration
For a full range of care, your orthodontist may take an interdisciplinary approach. This means they work with other dental specialists, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons and TMJ specialists, to get you the care you need.
